Koei Tecmo has announced a new strategic partnership with Japanese AI startup SpiralAI, signaling the company’s growing interest in artificial intelligence technologies for interactive entertainment.
Alongside the collaboration announcement, SpiralAI introduced a new large language model called Geppetto2, designed specifically for fictional characters in entertainment media. Unlike general-purpose AI models, Geppetto2 is tailored for use in video games and other narrative-driven experiences.
AI Designed for Fictional Characters
Geppetto2 focuses on allowing in-game characters to communicate with players in a more natural and immersive way. Instead of relying solely on pre-written dialogue trees, the technology aims to enable characters to hold dynamic conversations while still remaining faithful to their established personalities and stories.
According to SpiralAI, the system studies character traits and narrative backgrounds in depth, ensuring that generated dialogue remains consistent with the original character’s behavior and tone. The goal is to create interactions where characters feel as if they truly exist within the game world.
A Young Startup With Entertainment Roots
SpiralAI was founded in 2023 and quickly gained attention through an interactive AI application called HAPPY RAT. The project was produced by well-known anime voice actor Yuki Kaji, further highlighting the company’s focus on entertainment-focused AI experiences.
Potential Future Applications in Games
Koei Tecmo believes this technology could open the door to new forms of interactive storytelling and gameplay, where players can speak directly with characters in ways that were previously impossible with traditional scripted dialogue systems.
However, the company has not yet revealed which specific game titles might incorporate the technology. For now, the partnership appears to be focused on research and experimentation.
If successfully implemented, character-focused AI models like Geppetto2 could significantly change how players interact with game worlds—moving from scripted conversations toward more dynamic and personalized experiences in future titles.
