Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey by approximately three months. Originally scheduled to launch on February 16, 2027, the game will now arrive on May 20, 2027, as the development team needs additional time to complete the final stages of production.
In its official statement, the studio thanked players for their enthusiasm since the game was first announced in June. Santa Monica Studio acknowledged the high expectations surrounding the God of War franchise and said it wants to ensure the game meets its quality standards before release.
The additional development time will be used to apply the final polish and further improve the overall experience. The studio also asked fans for patience and said it plans to share another update in the near future.
Faye Takes the Lead in a New God of War Story
God of War Laufey marks a major change for the franchise, as it is the first mainline entry to feature a protagonist other than Kratos. Players will take control of Faye, also known as Laufey the Just, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother in the Norse era.
The story begins when Faye suddenly awakens in an unfamiliar place after her funeral. There, she discovers that the plans she had prepared to protect Kratos and Atreus are now in danger.
To save her family, Faye must fight her way through Everywhen, a realm described as an afterlife for the gods. The mysterious world is filled with dangerous magic and cruel deities from various mythologies, all competing for power.
This new setting and protagonist are expected to take the God of War series in a different direction from its previous entries. With the release now set for May 20, 2027, Santa Monica Studio has more time to refine Faye’s journey before players enter Everywhen.
