Square Enix has released new details and screenshots for Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, highlighting five recruitable companions, expanded world exploration, equipment crafting, and new battle mechanics. The upcoming RPG is scheduled to launch on February 16, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.
Five New Companions Revealed
The latest update introduces five traveling companions who can join the player’s journey:
- The Minstrel: A friendly traveler frequently found in town pubs.
- Tatyana: A mysterious woman who introduces herself using different names to the people she meets.
- Nora: The owner of a long-established smithing workshop in Pidona.
- Muse: The surviving daughter of House Claudius.
- Charl: A former Imperial Guard captain who now serves as Muse’s personal guard.
Players can recruit and manage their retinue through pubs and save points at any time. Characters who are not currently in the active party will still receive a share of Technique Points, allowing them to continue progressing.
World Exploration and Equipment Upgrades
Exploration plays a major role in Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United. New areas become accessible by talking to townspeople or sailing from harbors, while companions who have yet to be encountered appear as unidentified figures on the world map.
Completing quests and objectives increases Renown, which unlocks benefits such as additional ability slots and expanded United Attacks. Higher Renown also allows players to strengthen the Matriarch’s sacred relics by reforging them with Destinite.
At the Pidona Workshop, players can forge and reforge equipment using aurums and materials. Crafted items become available after a set number of battles, and multiple pieces can be commissioned simultaneously. Bringing back smiths who left following the theft of the Royal Partisan also expands the workshop’s available equipment.
Characters can carry up to two weapons, while heavier defensive equipment increases Defense at the cost of additional encumbrance, potentially reducing Speed during combat. An Auto-Equip option helps select suitable gear, and signature equipment previously restricted to specific characters can now be used by anyone, with additional bonuses for its original wielder.
Players can also encounter Mr. S throughout towns and dungeons. Finding him awards stickers, with every five stickers unlocking a useful boon, including faster workshop production and information about undiscovered treasure chests.
New Formations and Battle Systems
The game introduces additional battle formations, including options new to the SaGa franchise. Triple Incisors strengthens melee attacks for the three front-line allies while boosting ranged attacks for the two rear characters. Meanwhile, Rampaging Mammoth increases the Speed of every unit and grants extra Defense to the front unit after it acts.
Weapon and spell proficiency improves through combat, increasing Physical Attack and Magic Attack. Repeated use can also master techniques, evasions, and spells, allowing other characters to learn mastered abilities instantly.
Each character possesses a unique ability unlocked through battles or story progression, with up to four abilities equippable at once.
Battlefields can also feature elemental ley line affinities that strengthen matching spells and allow certain characters to recover HP each turn. Using techniques or spells from opposing elemental schools temporarily changes these affinities. The opposing pairs are Shucho and Genbu, Soryu and Byakko, and Solar and Lunar.
With expanded party customization, equipment progression, and deeper tactical options, Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United aims to offer players greater flexibility as they explore its world and prepare for challenging encounters.
