A new anime special has been announced as bonus content for the upcoming Sword Art Online game. The project is titled Unanswered//butterfly and will be produced by Polygon Pictures. The special is planned to have a runtime of approximately 110 minutes, delivering a full-length story set within the iconic SAO universe.
The anime will be tied to the newly announced game Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game takes players back to the deadly MMO world of Aincrad from the Sword Art Online franchise.

Synopsis
Set inside the virtual world of Aincrad, the story follows two players, Emirun and Rex, who once knew each other in the real world but unexpectedly reunite within the deadly SAO game.
After encountering each other again, they join a group of explorers determined to survive the harsh conditions of the floating castle. However, their journey takes a darker turn when they encounter a mysterious Player Killer (PK) known as the Black Swordsman, a fearsome figure rumored to eliminate other players without mercy.
Driven by a desire for revenge, Emirun and Rex seek out the legendary swordswoman Asuna Yuuki and begin training under her guidance. As they struggle to grow stronger, they must face the brutal reality of a world where monsters and players alike can become deadly enemies.
In a game where survival is never guaranteed, the two must discover what kind of future awaits them at the end of their journey—and whether they can carve out a new beginning within the dangerous world of Aincrad.
