The latest movie from the Made in Abyss franchise has officially revealed its first preview trailer.
The new film, titled Made in Abyss: The Awakening Enigma (Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi), is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on October 23.
It has also been confirmed that the sequel project will be released as a multi-part film series rather than a standard television anime format.
The movie is once again being produced by Kinema Citrus and will continue the franchise’s signature blend of Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Mystery, and Sci-fi storytelling.
The newly released footage immediately attracted major attention from fans due to its haunting atmosphere, mysterious visuals, and emotional tone that have become defining characteristics of the series.
The story takes place around the massive unexplored chasm known as the Abyss — a gigantic cave system filled with strange creatures, dangerous environments, and mysterious relics left behind by an unknown ancient civilization.
At the edge of the Abyss lies the city of Orth, where a young orphan girl named Riko dreams of becoming a legendary Cave Raider like her mother.
One day, while exploring the dangerous depths of the Abyss, she encounters a mysterious boy who is later revealed to be a robot named Reg. Together, the two begin a perilous journey deeper into the Abyss in search of answers, hidden truths, and Riko’s mother.
Since its original debut, Made in Abyss has become widely praised for combining beautiful worldbuilding and emotional storytelling with surprisingly dark themes and intense psychological moments.
Fans are already speculating about how Made in Abyss: The Awakening Enigma will continue the story following previous arcs, especially considering the increasingly dangerous and mysterious nature of the deeper Abyss layers.
The decision to adapt the continuation into multiple theatrical films has also raised expectations regarding animation quality and cinematic presentation, especially with Kinema Citrus returning to handle production.
