Persona 4 Revival: Atlus Explains Remake’s Development and Plans to Preserve the Original’s Charm

Atlus is developing Persona 4 Revival as a remake that aims to bring one of the franchise’s most beloved entries up to modern standards. Beyond upgraded graphics, the project will introduce adjustments to its combat system and character presentation while preserving the story and relationships that made the original so memorable.

During an interview at gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show 2026 on October 30, Atlus representatives discussed the reasons behind the remake, the challenge of honoring the original, and how the team hopes to make the experience appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers.

The interview featured Kazuhisa Wada, General Producer of P-Studio; Miyajima, Director of Persona 4 Revival; and Nomura, Business Producer responsible for the game’s promotion and marketing.

Why Atlus Is Remaking Persona 4

Kazuhisa Wada explained that the idea of remaking Persona 4 emerged after the development of Persona 3 Reload. The team wanted to revisit the game because they consider it one of the franchise’s outstanding works.

“We have always wanted to remake Persona 4 because we believe it is one of the remarkable masterpieces,” Wada said.

With Persona 4 Revival, Atlus aims to deliver a level of quality comparable to Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal. The project is also part of the company’s broader effort to strengthen the Persona franchise ahead of Persona 6.

The development team is looking beyond Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden. Miyajima said they have also studied related works, including the anime adaptation, fighting games, and rhythm games.

These spin-offs offer additional perspectives on the characters, their personalities, and their futures. The team may incorporate suitable elements as references or tributes in the remake.

Preserving the Town’s Warmth and Friendships

Nomura emphasized that players will not need to complete previous Persona games to enjoy Persona 4 Revival. Each main entry tells an independent story, allowing newcomers to jump into the adventure without prior knowledge.

For this remake, the team wants to preserve two defining elements: the close bonds between friends and the warm atmosphere of the town where the story takes place.

Atlus hopes these experiences will remain with players after they finish the game—not only the main story, but also the everyday moments shared with friends throughout their time in town.

Wada also highlighted Persona 4’s theme of confronting oneself. The story explores how people face their own identities and learn to accept different aspects of their personalities. He believes this makes the game a suitable entry point for newcomers to the franchise.

Balancing Modern Improvements With the Original Experience

One of the team’s biggest challenges is deciding which elements to preserve and which to update. Miyajima said the priority is to rebuild Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden while maintaining the foundation of the original experience.

From there, the team is evaluating different aspects of the game to meet modern Persona standards, including quality-of-life features, graphics, and overall gameplay.

The remake also faces a challenge with returning players. Persona 4 Golden has been available for many years and was released on Steam in recent years, meaning many fans already know its story and major events.

“We have to think about how to provide a new experience for players who already know the story and the various events in the game,” Miyajima explained.

To address this, the team is using modern technology to present scenes and experiences that were not previously possible. The main story will remain intact, but Atlus hopes the updated presentation will give longtime fans compelling reasons to revisit the adventure.

Updated Visuals and Reworked Combat

The remake will also change how characters are presented. Wada noted that the original game used simpler character proportions, relying on manga-inspired visuals to convey expressions and humor. Written effects, comic-style direction, and exaggerated movements were part of Persona 4’s distinctive comedic identity.

These elements will remain, but the remake will express them through updated visuals and character performances. The goal is to modernize the presentation without losing the original’s personality.

Combat will also receive new mechanics, including Baton Touch, Bokosuka Rush, and Futtobashi. Miyajima explained that these additions require the team to rebalance the game rather than simply reuse the original settings.

“We are actually readjusting the balance from the beginning, taking all the newly added mechanics into consideration,” Miyajima said.

The team is conducting repeated playtests to ensure battles remain comfortable to play while still providing a challenge. Difficulty is another consideration, as players can have different expectations even when playing on normal difficulty.

Through these changes, Atlus aims to make Persona 4 Revival a remake that respects its predecessor while offering a refreshed experience. For returning fans, it will be an opportunity to revisit the town and friends they remember. For newcomers, it could serve as an introduction to one of the stories that helped define the Persona series.
