The anime Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court has released a teaser trailer for its second cour, confirming that the series will return in January 2027. The upcoming episodes will adapt the First Royal Outing arc, continuing the story of Kou Reirin and Shu Keigetsu.
The second cour was announced immediately after the first cour concluded. Following the events of the previous episodes, Reirin and Keigetsu have developed a friendship despite their complicated history. Their relationship will take another step forward as they travel to the southern territories governed by the Shu family.
The new arc is expected to expand the story beyond the imperial court, introducing additional characters and exploring the political and personal challenges surrounding the two young women.
New Cast Members Announced
Three additional voice actors have joined the cast for the second cour:
- Yuichi Nakamura as Kou Keikou, Reirin’s eldest brother
- Shunichi Toki as Kou Keishou, Reirin’s second-eldest brother
- Chiaki Kobayashi as Unran, a young village leader in the southern territories who becomes an important figure as the story progresses

Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court is based on the Japanese light novel series written by Satsuki Nakamura, with illustrations by YukiKana. The story was first published on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website in July 2020 before receiving a print release from Ichijinsha in December of the same year.
A manga adaptation illustrated by Ei Ohitsuji also began serialization in Monthly Comic Zero Sum around that time. Seven Seas Entertainment licenses both the light novels and manga in English.
The story takes place in the Kingdom of Ei, where five clans each present a maiden to become an imperial consort, with only one destined to become empress. Kou Reirin, admired for her beauty and delicate appearance, seems poised to marry the crown prince. However, her rival, Shu Keigetsu, steals her body, leaving Reirin imprisoned and facing possible execution.
Despite her predicament, Reirin discovers unexpected advantages in her new, stronger body. Her determination and positive outlook become central to her efforts to overcome the conspiracy and navigate the dangerous world of imperial politics.
With the First Royal Outing arc set to begin in January 2027, the second cour will continue exploring Reirin and Keigetsu’s evolving relationship while introducing new characters and conflicts.w
