The second installment in the new Made in Abyss theatrical film series is officially in production, continuing the story following the release of Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery). The first film opened in Japanese theaters on October 23, 2026.
To commemorate the opening of the first installment, the production team also unveiled a new key visual featuring Srajo and the members of her Curse Fleet, Hail Hex. The announcement was accompanied by the reveal of several additional cast members joining the franchise.
The newly announced voice cast includes:
- Yume Miyamoto as Menae
- Nana Mizuki as Srajo
- Akeno Watanabe as Nishagora
- Shunsuke Takeuchi as Yataramaru
- Nao Toyama as Sherumi
Further details about the second film, including its release date and story, have yet to be announced.
Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery Continues the Journey
Picking up after the events of Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the first film follows Riko, Reg, Nanachi, and Faputa as they descend into the Abyss’ seventh layer. Their journey takes them deeper into the mysterious environment, where dangerous creatures and the secrets of the Abyss continue to threaten their survival.
Kinema Citrus returns to handle animation production, maintaining its involvement in the franchise. The main staff includes Masayuki Kojima as director, Hideyuki Kurata handling the screenplay, and Yuka Kuroda and Kazuchika Kise of Production I.G responsible for character designs.
The film’s theme song, “Chain of the Abyss,” is performed by composer Kevin Penkin featuring Mori Calliope. The latest trailer also introduced two characters: Tepasté, voiced by Sumire Morohoshi, and Cravali, voiced by Takanori Hoshino.
About Made in Abyss
Made in Abyss is a manga series written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi, serialized on Takeshobo’s Web Comic Gamma. The series has surpassed 22 million copies in circulation.
The story follows Riko, a young girl who dreams of exploring the Abyss, an enormous pit filled with ancient relics, strange creatures, and mysteries left behind by previous explorers. Together with Reg, a robot boy she encounters during her adventures, Riko begins a dangerous descent into its depths.
The franchise has expanded through television anime seasons and theatrical releases, with composer Kevin Penkin’s soundtrack becoming a prominent part of its identity.
A concert titled Made in Abyss Film Concert: Deep Echoes of Resonance was also held at Tokyo’s Nakano ZERO Grand Hall on February 8, 2026. Penkin conducted a live orchestra performing music from the anime, accompanied by footage from the series. Vocalists Ko Saito and KIHOW of MYTH & ROID also performed, while main cast members Miyu Tomita, Mariya Ise, and Shiori Izawa appeared at the event.
With the second theatrical installment now in production, the story of Riko and her companions is set to continue beyond the seventh layer as their exploration of the Abyss deepens.
