Destiny 2 players have always been vocal about the game’s evolving mechanics. Recently, a growing part of the community has been asking Bungie to bring back a classic gear system that once allowed for deeper customization and meaningful progression.
It’s really frustrating that Crafting WAS the solution to the weapon hunt / storage issue, but Bungie abandoned it due to engagement worries.

Why Players Want the Old Gear System Back
In earlier Destiny games, the gear system gave players more control over their loadouts, stats, and perks. Many feel that the current system limits customization and forces Guardians into repetitive gameplay loops without much variety.
On forums and social media, players reminisce about the ability to fine-tune their builds, arguing that the old system provided a sense of accomplishment. Exotic weapons and armor felt more impactful, and loot grinding had a more rewarding feel.
Will Bungie Listen to the Community?
Bungie has a history of responding to community feedback, with past updates reflecting fan requests. However, the return of the classic gear system would require significant balancing and development time. The studio has yet to comment on whether such a change is possible in future updates.
With The Final Shape expansion and future seasonal updates on the horizon, Destiny 2 fans are hopeful that Bungie will reconsider how gear customization works. Whether the developers bring back the old system or introduce a revamped version, one thing is clear—the community wants more depth in how they build their Guardians.
