Crunchyroll has acquired the North American and worldwide distribution rights for The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure, the first theatrical film in the popular The Apothecary Diaries franchise. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle the film’s theatrical distribution, with release dates outside Japan yet to be announced.
The distribution agreement covers international markets worldwide, excluding Asia, while India is included. The movie is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on December 11, 2026, marking a new milestone for the mystery series.
The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure will feature an original mystery written by the franchise’s creator, Natsu Hyuga. Norihiro Naganuma will direct the film, with TOHO Animation STUDIO responsible for animation production. The theatrical project will give fans a new story centered on the series’ distinctive blend of palace intrigue, investigation, and historical drama.
The franchise follows Maomao, a knowledgeable young apothecary who is sold to the emperor’s palace and forced to work as a low-ranking servant. Despite her position, Maomao refuses to remain uninvolved when unusual incidents occur around her. Her medical knowledge, sharp observations, and curiosity eventually draw her into solving mysteries alongside Jinshi, a handsome and influential palace official.
The original light novel series is written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Toko Shino, and is published by Shufunotomo. It has also inspired two manga adaptations: one written by Itsuki Nanao and illustrated by Nekokurage, and another written and illustrated by Minoji Kurata.
For English-speaking audiences, J-Novel Club publishes the light novels, while Square Enix handles the manga releases.
The movie’s announcement comes during an active period for the franchise. The Apothecary Diaries has recently revealed plans for its first live-action series adaptation and its first console game, further expanding the property beyond its original format.
Additionally, The Failure at God School, another manga with a story written by Natsu Hyuga, has announced an anime adaptation.
With Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment overseeing its international theatrical release, The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure is set to introduce Maomao’s latest mystery to audiences beyond Japan. Fans can expect further announcements regarding international screening dates as the December premiere approaches.
