Nintendo Switch 2 fans eager to add a GameCube controller to their setup will soon get their chance—but they’ll need to meet some specific requirements first. Preorders for the Switch 2 GameCube Controller open as early as May 8, but access is limited to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, and even then, not everyone can buy it right away.
🗓️ When Can You Preorder the Switch 2 GameCube Controller?
According to Nintendo, selected users with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership will begin receiving invitations to preorder the controller between May 8 and May 12. These users must have already secured a Switch 2 preorder directly from Nintendo to qualify.
If you don’t get an early access invitation, don’t worry—general access for all active Switch Online members starts May 13. But take note:
-
Only one controller can be purchased per Nintendo account
-
Free trial members are not eligible
-
The controller is only available via the official Nintendo store:

🎮 What Makes This Controller Special?
The Switch 2 GameCube controller retains the classic layout that made it a favorite among Super Smash Bros. players and retro fans alike. Priced at $64.99, it’s a wireless controller that supports Switch 2 hardware and is optimized for GameCube titles available through the Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
❗ Why You Should Act Fast
With high demand and limited availability, this controller is expected to sell out quickly—especially among Smash Bros. enthusiasts and collectors. Since Nintendo is controlling distribution directly and limiting purchases to verified members, getting one may take some effort.
✅ How to Prepare
To improve your chances:
-
Ensure your Nintendo Switch Online subscription is active (not a free trial)
-
Sign into your Nintendo account and check your email between May 8–12 for a potential invite
-
