Square Enix Shareholder Questions the Future of Live-Service Games After Server Shutdowns

During its latest shareholders’ meeting, Square Enix faced questions regarding the long-term preservation of its live-service games after their online servers are shut down. One of the titles specifically mentioned was NieR Re[in]carnation, which officially ended service after several years of operation.

The discussion centered on what happens to games once they become unplayable. As more live-service titles reach the end of their lifecycle, players and shareholders alike have raised concerns about preserving their stories, characters, and gameplay experiences for future audiences.

Square Enix acknowledged that operating live-service games requires significant ongoing investment while their active lifespan is often relatively short. In recent years, the company has discontinued several mobile titles, including Dragon Quest of the Stars, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, and NieR Re[in]carnation, reflecting the challenges of maintaining online games after player activity declines.

During the meeting, one shareholder also referenced offline preservation efforts and private server projects created by the community for NieR Re[in]carnation. The shareholder argued that Square Enix itself should play a more active role in preserving its games rather than relying on fan-led initiatives. The comment reflects a broader conversation within the gaming industry about digital preservation and the accessibility of online-only titles after their official services end.

In response, Square Enix explained that there is no single preservation strategy that applies to every game. Instead, the company evaluates each title individually and determines the most appropriate way to preserve its content. For certain games, Square Enix continues to publish official information or archive important story scenes through video platforms, allowing fans to revisit key moments even after online services have concluded.

Although the company did not announce an official offline version of NieR Re[in]carnation, it emphasized that it remains committed to exploring methods that allow players to continue experiencing the stories of discontinued games. As the industry increasingly relies on live-service models, preserving digital titles has become an important topic for both developers and players. Square Enix’s latest comments suggest the publisher recognizes these concerns and intends to continue evaluating new approaches to maintaining access to its legacy content in the future.
