Nintendo Switch 2 Might Bring Updated Classic Controllers

April 12, 2025
Updated NES controller and Joy-Cons designed for Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility

Nintendo has finally revealed the compatibility list for the highly anticipated Switch 2, and the good news is: almost everything players already own will work with the new system. However, a few key accessories and controllers may face limitations—or require updated versions entirely.

What’s Compatible—and What’s Not?

According to Nintendo, nearly all Switch-era controllers and accessories will work on the Switch 2. This includes the Pro Controller, third-party gamepads, and even niche items like Ring Fit and Poké Ball Plus. However, a few exceptions stand out:

  • The original Switch dock, HDMI cable, charging stand, and Micro SD cards won’t work.

  • The original Joy-Con controllers can still be used, but their HOME button won’t function, and they can’t be charged on the Switch 2.

  • Similarly, NES controllers released for Nintendo Switch Online can no longer be charged with the new console, and their full functionality is compromised.

A New Hope for Retro Controller Fans

While players have replacement options for Joy-Cons—thanks to the newly designed Switch 2 models—that’s not the case for retro NES controllers. But things may be looking up.

According to a recent leak from Nash Weedle, a well-known figure in the gaming rumor scene, Nintendo may be working on a new version of the NES controllers designed specifically for the Switch 2. These updated controllers would restore full functionality, including charging support and HOME button capabilities, eliminating the need to rely on older hardware.

This move could also signal future updates for other classic Nintendo controllers like SNES, N64, or GameCube models, offering seamless integration with Switch 2.

Why This Matters

Nintendo has a long history of honoring its past while pushing forward. By updating its classic controller lineup to suit modern hardware, the company not only satisfies retro gaming fans but also builds a stronger case for its Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack offerings.

For fans, this means better playability, fewer compatibility headaches, and more reasons to revisit timeless classics with the feel of authentic hardware.
