The future of travel is here—and it’s immersive. Meta’s Quest 3 virtual and mixed reality headset is now making waves in the skies, thanks to a game-changing feature called Travel Mode, introduced in 2024. This innovation allows users to enjoy VR experiences even while in motion, whether they’re flying on a plane or riding a train.
A Smarter Way to Fly
Meta Quest 3’s Travel Mode solves a major challenge that VR headsets have traditionally faced—motion interference. With this new feature, passengers can now enjoy stable, comfortable VR sessions mid-flight. The Quest 3 also supports both virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR), so users can choose to stay aware of their surroundings or fully immerse themselves in their experience.
Add in hand-tracking capabilities—eliminating the need for bulky external controllers—and you have a seamless, user-friendly setup that’s perfectly suited for airline use.
Lufthansa Leads the Way
German airline Lufthansa has become the first major carrier to adopt Meta Quest 3 headsets on select flights. Nearly 4,000 passengers have already experienced VR at cruising altitude, watching movies in a private theater, exploring 360° environments, or relaxing with immersive meditation apps.
According to Björn Becker of Lufthansa Group, the passenger response has been “overwhelmingly positive”, and both Meta and Lufthansa are thrilled with the results of their partnership. Together with developer MSM.digital, the trio received the prestigious 2025 APEX Award for Best Inflight Entertainment—a major win that cements VR’s place in the future of travel.
A Vision Beyond Lufthansa
Meta’s Sarah Malkin called the Lufthansa program a “pivotal moment” in the evolution of Travel Mode, signaling that the company is actively looking to expand the offering to more airlines. While specific partners haven’t been announced yet, the demand and enthusiasm are undeniable.
Travel, Reimagined
From long-haul flights to short hops across the country, Meta Quest 3 is redefining what passengers can do in the sky. Whether it’s watching a film in a virtual cinema, exploring distant worlds, or just relaxing in a calming mixed-reality space, in-flight time is no longer just downtime—it’s experience time.
As more airlines join the movement, don’t be surprised if your next flight includes a headset handout alongside your drink and snack. The sky is no longer the limit—it’s just the beginning.
