Sigil VTT layoffs with Dungeons and Dragons

The Sigil VTT team, behind the digital tabletop experience for Dungeons and Dragons, has suffered significant layoffs. Wizards of the Coast is scaling down its ambitious plans for Sigil as a standalone game, with most of the team being let go this week.

This news was confirmed in an internal email from Dan Rawson, Senior Vice President of Dungeons & Dragons and Hasbro Direct, sent to employees. The email explained the company’s decision following months of alpha testing.

Email Excerpt from Dan Rawson

“After several months of alpha testing, we’ve concluded that our aspirations for Sigil as a large, standalone game with a distinct monetization path will not be realized. As such, we cannot maintain a large development effort and most of the Sigil team will be separated from the company this week.”

“We will transition Sigil to a DDB feature. We will maintain a small team to sustain Sigil and release products already developed at no additional cost to users. To those moving on, we will provide robust support, including severance packages, 2024 bonus, career placement services, and internal opportunities where possible.”

Rawson praised the Sigil team’s work and emphasized that though the full vision won’t be realized, fans will still benefit from what’s been developed as part of D&D Beyond (DDB).

This decision marks a major shift in the future of virtual tabletop gaming for Dungeons and Dragons, as fans and players await the next move from Wizards of the Coast.
