Doom: The Dark Ages, one of the most highly anticipated shooters of 2025, is facing early controversy—not over gameplay, but over its physical disc version. According to leaks and early access reports, the game disc includes just a tiny fraction of the full game, forcing players to download the rest.

A now-viral image (see below) shows the Xbox version’s install screen, indicating that only 328.76MB of data is on the disc—199.90MB of which is installed at the time of the screenshot. The PS5 version reportedly contains just 85MB, making the physical release essentially a digital key.

Source Reports Confirm the Details

This information comes from credible gaming sources, including Pure Xbox and early buyers posting online, such as the X user @nilynix, who shared the Xbox download screen. These revelations are disappointing for collectors and players with slow or limited internet access.

Why It Matters

Having only a few hundred megabytes on a disc means:

  • Collectors lose long-term access if digital servers ever shut down.

  • Offline players are left out entirely.

  • The disc may lose resale or archival value over time.

This practice also reignites debates about the future of physical media, game ownership, and preservation in the increasingly digital-first gaming world.

Bethesda and Microsoft Yet to Comment

As of now, neither Bethesda nor Microsoft has issued a statement to confirm or deny the low disc content reports. Until then, gamers are advised to prepare for a massive day-one download, even if buying the disc version.
