Deltarune Switch 2 Adds a Joy-Con Feature

Deltarune gameplay trailer showing dual Joy-Con mouse control feature on Switch 2

As Deltarune gears up for the release of Chapters 3 and 4, fans were hit with a surprising announcement: the game is officially launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 — and it’s doing so with an exclusive twist.

In a newsletter released via Fangamer, solo developer Toby Fox confirmed that the Switch 2 version will feature a special in-game room that allows players to use mouse-like controls with both Joy-Cons simultaneously — a feature made possible thanks to the new hardware’s enhanced motion capabilities.

A Trailer Tease and a Dual Control Surprise

Though the reveal was subtle, sharp-eyed fans noticed a brief glimpse of this mechanic in the Switch 2 Direct trailer at around the 40-second mark. The scene shows two curved lines of incoming sprites colliding with objects marked “L” and “R” — a clever visual nod to left and right Joy-Cons being used independently like dual mice.

Fox noted in the newsletter that this feature “can only be properly experienced on Switch 2” due to its improved motion sensitivity and tracking. However, he also reassured fans that the special room will still appear in non-Switch 2 versions — just with completely different control schemes.

Why It Matters for the Game (and the Developer)

This exclusive Switch 2 feature isn’t just a gimmick. It marks a significant milestone for Deltarune and its creator. For Toby Fox — a solo developer known for creating Undertale and pushing the boundaries of indie storytelling — having a unique feature at launch on Nintendo’s next-gen console feels like a full-circle moment.

It also shows how Fox is leveraging platform-specific strengths to deliver unique gameplay moments. Whether it’s enhancing immersion or offering optional challenges, this new room adds a layer of experimentation that aligns with Deltarune’s quirky, genre-defying spirit.

What’s Next for Deltarune?

With Chapters 3 and 4 set to drop soon, excitement around Deltarune is at an all-time high. The dual Joy-Con feature may be a small piece of the puzzle, but it speaks volumes about Fox’s attention to detail and willingness to innovate — even within a retro-inspired RPG format. And while Switch 2 players will get the full experience of this feature, fans on other platforms won’t miss out entirely — they’ll just interact with it in a different way.

Whether you’re in it for the story, the music, or the mechanics, Deltarune’s next chapters are shaping up to be something special — and the Switch 2 might just be the best seat in the house.
