Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster is set to reintroduce fans to the magical world of Luxendarc with upgraded visuals and gameplay tweaks. However, it comes with a controversial change: the removal of the ability to completely eliminate random battle encounters — a feature that was a fan-favorite in the original Nintendo 3DS release.

No More Zero Encounter Rate

Square Enix confirmed that players in the Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster will only be able to adjust random battle encounter rates between 50% and 200%. This means that, unlike the original 3DS version, players will no longer be able to set encounters to zero and freely explore the map without interruptions.

Originally released in 2012, Bravely Default captivated players with its clever Brave and Default battle mechanics, deep job system, and nostalgic connection to the Final Fantasy series. The 3DS version later added the ability to modify encounter rates — a feature praised for offering players full control over their grinding and exploration experiences. Its absence in the remaster has left long-time fans feeling divided.

A Look Back at Encounter Rate History

Interestingly, the encounter rate customization was not available in the original Japanese release. It was introduced later for Western audiences in 2014. Its inclusion in Bravely Second: End Layer and later adjustments in Bravely Default II — which featured visible enemies — showcased Square Enix’s experimentation with encounter systems. The HD Remaster’s decision feels like a step back for those who enjoyed total flexibility.

Storage Requirements and Physical Release Details

Adding to the mixed reactions, Square Enix also revealed that the physical version of Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster will be distributed via Game-Key Cards, requiring players to download the full game (around 11 GB of storage needed). This shift follows a growing trend for third-party releases on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, sparking additional debate among collectors and physical media enthusiasts.

Launch Date Approaching

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster is scheduled to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5. Despite some controversial changes, excitement remains high among fans eager to return to Luxendarc and experience the beloved JRPG with stunning modern visuals.
