As reported by Eurogamer, Petras’ death was shared by former Blizzard cinematic project director Harley Huggins II, who called him a “game development legend” and “amazingly gifted artist.”
The unexpected passing of Petras has left the gaming world in mourning. Huggins shared that the two began working at Blizzard Entertainment during the same week and became close friends throughout their years together at the studio.

Petras spent nearly two decades at Blizzard, first joining in May 1997, working until February 2005, and returning in January 2010 until his departure in October 2021. His work shaped some of Blizzard’s most beloved titles, most notably as art director for World of Warcraft and a key visual architect for Overwatch.
Within the Overwatch universe, his contributions were honored in the in-game lore through the “Petras Act,” a fictional law used against the Overwatch team—an Easter egg many fans now recognize as a subtle tribute to his legacy.
