GTA 6 Could Accelerate the Decline of Physical Games, Says CI Games CEO

The decision to release Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) without a physical disc edition could significantly accelerate the decline of physical game sales, according to CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski. His comments have reignited discussions about the future of boxed video games as the industry continues shifting toward digital distribution.

Tyminski believes that the launch strategy for GTA 6, combined with reports that Sony may gradually reduce support for physical game production in the coming years, will encourage more publishers to prioritize digital releases. In his view, the traditional retail model has become increasingly difficult to sustain due to rising costs and lower profit margins compared to digital storefronts.

Explaining the economics behind physical game sales, Tyminski noted that a large portion of a game’s retail price never reaches the developer or publisher. Using a standard $69.99 game as an example, he estimated that retailers may keep 25% to 35% of the revenue, while distributors receive another 10% to 20%. In addition, manufacturing, packaging, and disc production costs can total around $10 per copy, further reducing profits.

Based on those estimates, a studio may receive only a little over $26 from each physical copy sold. By comparison, a digitally distributed version of the same game could generate around $49 per sale, giving publishers substantially higher margins while eliminating manufacturing and retail distribution expenses.

The financial advantages of digital distribution have already encouraged many companies to invest more heavily in online storefronts and digital-only releases. As internet infrastructure and console storage continue to improve, the convenience of downloading games directly has become increasingly appealing for both publishers and consumers.

Despite these business benefits, physical games continue to enjoy strong support from collectors and longtime gaming enthusiasts. Many players value boxed editions for ownership, preservation, resale opportunities, and collectible packaging. While digital distribution appears to be the industry’s long-term direction, the debate over the future of physical media remains ongoing, with many fans hoping that disc-based releases will continue to coexist alongside digital platforms for years to come.
