Chinese indie developer Infigo Games has launched a playtest for its upcoming cosmic horror adventure, The Colour Beyond: A Zeroth Kind. Available now on Steam, the playtest will run until November 12, giving players an early look at its supernatural investigation mechanics and unsettling narrative.
A Graduation Trip Turns Into a Countdown to Death
The game follows Wang Yangming, a fourth-year university student who travels to the remote Haidong Island for a graduation trip. His plans take a disturbing turn when he experiences a premonition predicting his death in ten days.
After gaining the ability to enter and influence other people’s minds, Yangming must investigate the island’s strange phenomena and uncover a way to prevent the impending tragedy.
Investigate a World Through 360-Degree Environments
Inspired by Square Enix’s Paranormasight series, The Colour Beyond: A Zeroth Kind uses 360-degree panoramic environments that players can rotate to examine their surroundings.
Rather than exploring through traditional side-scrolling or fully 3D gameplay, players investigate detailed backgrounds from different angles to uncover clues and piece together the island’s mysteries.
Another key mechanic involves manipulating people’s thoughts and perceptions. Players collect evidence represented as cards, then use those cards to influence others and potentially alter their predetermined fates.
Mind Manipulation Comes at a Cost
Yangming’s supernatural abilities carry serious risks. Repeatedly entering other people’s minds can cause his body to mutate and his perception of reality to become distorted.
Players must therefore balance their investigation with the danger of gradually losing their humanity. The consequences of using these powers add another layer of tension to the game’s cosmic horror premise.
The current Steam playtest supports English and Simplified Chinese. Japanese language support is planned for the full release, though Infigo Games has not yet announced an official launch date for The Colour Beyond: A Zeroth Kind.
