The upcoming anime film adaptation of the novel “Kono Hon wo Nusumu Mono wa” (Whoever Steals This Book) has officially been scheduled to premiere in Japan on December 26, 2025.
Produced by the emerging animation studio Kagome Company, this project marks the studio’s first major anime adaptation since its establishment on March 22, 2022.
Story Synopsis
The story follows Mifuyu, a high school girl born into a family of passionate book collectors. Despite being surrounded by books throughout her life, she despises them. Her great-grandfather once founded Mikura Hall, a famous library located in the heart of the city.
When a mysterious thief steals from Mikura Hall, an ancient curse is unleashed, forcing Mifuyu to enter the world of books she hates most. With the help of a mysterious boy named Mashiro, Mifuyu must retrieve her great-grandfather’s stolen collection and save her city from a magical catastrophe.
Release and Distribution
The film is being developed under Kagome Company, with KADOKAWA listed as part of the production committee. While its Japanese theatrical release has been confirmed for late December, an international release has yet to be announced. Reports suggest that a third-party distributor may handle overseas screenings in the near future.
Blending fantasy, mystery, and emotional storytelling, Whoever Steals This Book is poised to close out 2025 as one of the most intriguing and imaginative anime films of the year.
