In a strategic pivot, Warner Bros. Games has announced a major internal restructuring designed to refocus the company’s game development efforts on its four most successful and fan-favorite franchises: Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. The news comes after a string of underwhelming releases and controversial monetization models, including the widely criticized Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which launched in early 2024 and was shut down within a year, and the live-service brawler MultiVersus, which also ended service amid backlash over microtransactions and content delivery.

A New Strategic Direction

According to a new report from Variety, Warner Bros. Games is determined to rebuild fan trust and prioritize quality by focusing on core IPs that have consistently performed well. This restructuring comes without layoffs, and instead emphasizes leadership promotions and internal realignment.

“We are very fortunate to have a strong stable of development and technology talent,” said J.B. Perrette, CEO of Global Streaming and Games at Warner Bros. Discovery. “I’m looking forward to working closely with them and the team as we work to make the best games possible for our key franchises.”

Leadership Changes and Studio Assignments

As part of the initiative:

  • Shaun Himmerick, of NetherRealm Studios, has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Development, and will now oversee upcoming Mortal Kombat and DC Universe projects.

  • The Warner Bros. Games Montreal studio head will lead the development of new Game of Thrones titles as well as games inspired by the Harry Potter universe.

  • Several internal teams are being realigned to better integrate gameplay innovation with Warner Bros.’ vast cinematic and streaming properties.

Fan Reactions and Future Outlook

Gamers have greeted the announcement with cautious optimism. While excitement is growing for potential new entries in the Mortal Kombat and Harry Potter franchises, fans remain skeptical after recent failed experiments with the live service model. Still, this focused approach could mark a turning point. With proven IPs at the center and seasoned leadership in control, Warner Bros. Games may be poised to restore its reputation as a powerhouse publisher in the gaming world.
