Virtuos Reportedly Lays Off 300 Staff

Virtuos game development studio empty desks after reported layoffs in 2025

The studio behind the highly anticipated Oblivion Remastered project has reportedly been hit by a massive wave of layoffs, with up to 300 employees losing their jobs across multiple continents. Virtuos, known for its work on major remasters and ports including Metal Gear Solid Delta, Horizon Zero Dawn, and The Outer Worlds, is now facing serious challenges of its own.

According to a report from French video game journalist Gauthier Andres, around 7% of Virtuos’ global workforce is being let go. The majority of the job losses are said to be occurring in China, affecting nearly 200 staff, while another 100 positions are at risk in the U.S. and Europe.

This unexpected round of layoffs has stunned the gaming community, especially since Virtuos only recently expanded operations with a new studio in South Korea. The timing raises questions about the company’s financial stability and long-term strategic planning.

Industry-Wide Trend Hits Another Developer

While Virtuos is not part of Microsoft, the news comes amid a larger trend of sweeping layoffs across the gaming industry, many stemming from Microsoft-owned studios. With cost-cutting measures affecting both AAA and independent studios, Virtuos now joins the growing list of developers forced to scale back despite recent successes.

The studio has built a strong reputation over the years for high-profile collaborations and technical excellence. From porting XCOM to iOS to enhancing Horizon Zero Dawn for PC, Virtuos has become a go-to partner for many major publishers. Most recently, the team has been making headlines for its work on the Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, a project that has been eagerly followed by fans of Bethesda’s iconic RPG.

What This Means for Oblivion Remastered

While Virtuos has yet to issue an official statement regarding the layoffs or the status of Oblivion Remastered, the reduction in workforce has raised concerns about potential delays or restructuring of the project. The RPG community is watching closely for updates, as the remaster remains one of the most anticipated releases among Elder Scrolls fans.

With studios facing mounting pressure to deliver polished experiences on tighter budgets, projects like Oblivion Remastered could see changes in scope, timeline, or team composition.

Until more is revealed, fans are left hoping that the core vision for the remaster remains intact—and that those affected by the layoffs are able to land on their feet.
