Ubisoft has officially confirmed that a new Ghost Recon title is in development, and for the first time in years, it will be a first-person shooter. This news marks a major pivot for the long-running tactical franchise, which has primarily relied on a third-person perspective in recent installments like Ghost Recon: Wildlands (2017) and Breakpoint (2019).

🎯 Confirmed During Shareholder Meeting

The announcement came during Ubisoft’s July 10, 2025 shareholder meeting, where CEO Yves Guillemot and CFO Frederick Duguet discussed the company’s current roadmap. According to Game File (via Insider Gaming), Guillemot stated that Ubisoft was committed to “capitalizing on upcoming launches, such as The Division and Ghost Recon.”

CFO Frederick Duguet followed up by confirming that the upcoming Ghost Recon will be a “first-person-shooter-type” experience, representing a dramatic shift from the third-person approach seen in recent titles.

🕹️ Back to the Franchise’s Roots

While the shift may surprise some, the Ghost Recon franchise originally debuted as a first-person shooter in 2001. Although many of its modern entries have favored third-person tactical gameplay, earlier titles in the series prioritized realism and immersion via the first-person perspective.

Rumors of the franchise returning to its roots began circulating in June 2025, with insider reports suggesting the new project—codenamed Ovr—would drop third-person entirely in favor of an immersive first-person experience.

🔍 Why the Shift Matters

Switching to first-person could help Ghost Recon better compete with popular tactical FPS games such as Call of Duty, Rainbow Six Siege, and Escape from Tarkov. It also aligns with broader industry trends favoring immersive and competitive gameplay experiences.

While few gameplay details have been confirmed, expectations are high that the next Ghost Recon title will feature:

  • Tight gunplay and authentic military mechanics

  • A return to hardcore tactical realism

  • Smaller-scale, mission-focused gameplay rather than a sprawling open world

🧩 What’s Next?

As of now, there’s no confirmed release date or official title, but with Ubisoft acknowledging the game publicly, fans can likely expect a teaser or gameplay reveal in late 2025 or early 2026—possibly at events like Gamescom or Ubisoft Forward.

This announcement suggests that Ubisoft is ready to refresh one of its core franchises by leaning into what originally made Ghost Recon stand out: strategic combat, immersive realism, and now, a true first-person perspective.
