A fan-developed mod for the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered has finally introduced online multiplayer, letting fans swing through New York City together for the first time. The release comes years after it was revealed that Insomniac Games once had its own plans for a standalone Spider-Man multiplayer project, only for it to be canceled before an official reveal.
The Cancelled “Great Web” Project
In 2023, a massive data breach at Insomniac Games leaked countless details about unannounced projects, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, a standalone Venom game, and even a co-op Spider-Man title called The Great Web. While the Venom spin-off and future Spider-Man sequels may still be in development, The Great Web was reportedly scrapped before fans ever got to experience it. A leaked trailer suggested it could have been an ambitious multiplayer project, leaving players wondering what might have been.
Fans Step In With Their Own Multiplayer Mod
Thanks to modder hbgda, players can now get a taste of that dream through a brand-new Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered multiplayer mod, spotted by industry leaker Okami on Twitter (X). The mod allows players to team up with friends and even tackle parts of the game’s campaign cooperatively. Currently, the mod is available through the creator’s Patreon, though it sits behind a paywall.
Insomniac’s Current Focus
Meanwhile, Insomniac Games is busy with other projects, most notably Marvel’s Wolverine, which has been in development since its reveal in 2021. Updates have been sparse, with the studio confirming in April 2025 that the game remains in active development but won’t be shown until it’s ready.
Rumors also persist regarding the leaked standalone Venom game, with insiders suggesting it could be revealed as early as September’s rumored PlayStation State of Play or at The Game Awards in December.
