A brand-new Resident Evil game was just revealed during Anime Expo 2025, but it’s not the kind of horror experience longtime fans anticipated. Titled Resident Evil: Survival Unit, the game is being developed for iOS and Android as a mobile real-time strategy experience, marking a bold new direction for the iconic horror franchise.
A Surprise Reveal at Anime Expo 2025
Anime Expo, the annual Los Angeles-based convention featuring panels from Crunchyroll, MAPPA, Netflix, and Bandai Namco, stunned attendees this year with a surprise reveal from Capcom. The studio officially announced Resident Evil: Survival Unit, developed in collaboration with JoyCity Corporation.
Rather than a traditional survival horror title or mainline entry like Resident Evil 9, Survival Unit is a mobile strategy game — a genre shift that caught many fans off guard.
What Is Resident Evil: Survival Unit?
Resident Evil: Survival Unit is described as a real-time strategy (RTS) game, designed to combine the atmosphere of the Resident Evil universe with tactical squad-based gameplay. Players will take command of iconic characters, manage resources, and battle hordes of infected in mobile-optimized combat missions.
According to Capcom, this game aims to bridge the gap between series veterans and newer mobile-focused players.

A Risky Move or Smart Expansion?
Fans of the series are divided on the announcement. While some are intrigued by the potential for strategic horror gameplay on the go, others were disappointed not to see Resident Evil 9 or a console-based spin-off.
Despite skepticism, Capcom has a history of experimenting with the franchise. From the beloved Resident Evil 2 Remake to the polarizing Operation Raccoon City, the IP has never been afraid to try new things — and Survival Unit seems poised to join that legacy of bold experimentation.
Silent Hill Panel Also Confirmed
Capcom wasn’t the only horror heavyweight at Anime Expo. Konami developers are set to host a special panel on Silent Hill f, an upcoming entry in the Silent Hill franchise. With both Resident Evil and Silent Hill represented at the same event, horror fans had plenty to scream about — in the best way.
Resident Evil: Survival Unit might not be the game fans were expecting, but it shows that Capcom is continuing to diversify its horror empire. With a full reveal scheduled for July 10, the question now is: can a mobile strategy game live up to the Resident Evil name?
