Many Resident Evil(RE) fans have long hoped for a Resident Evil 2-style remake of the game that started it all — the 1996 original Resident Evil. However, recent comments from a trusted industry insider have cast doubt on those hopes being fulfilled anytime soon.
RE1 Remake Is Not in Development
According to insider Dusk Golem, a known and reliable source of Resident Evil leaks, Capcom currently has no plans to remake RE1. In a tweet, Dusk Golem stated that while a remake is not impossible, it’s not in development right now and likely won’t happen until after the rumored remakes of Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 0 are released.
“A remake of RE1 is not in the works,” Dusk Golem wrote. “Maybe someday, but not for the foreseeable future.”

Capcom’s Resident Evil Strategy: Two Parallel Paths
Since the highly successful Resident Evil 2 Remake launched in 2019, Capcom has been pursuing a dual strategy: developing both first-person mainline entries like Resident Evil 7 and Village, and third-person remakes of classic titles like RE2 and RE4. Both branches of the franchise have received critical acclaim, but the remakes, in particular, have reignited love for the series’ roots.
While Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 have seen full-scale, modern remakes, the original Resident Evil only received a remaster of its 2002 GameCube remake. This version, while still praised, is now showing its age compared to Capcom’s latest RE Engine-powered remakes.
What’s Coming Instead?
Although RE1 isn’t on Capcom’s immediate radar, that doesn’t mean fans won’t have anything to look forward to. According to ongoing rumors:
-
Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 0 may be the next remakes in the pipeline.
-
A mainline title, Resident Evil 9, is rumored to be in development, possibly featuring an open-world format.
-
The mysterious Resident Evil Outrage, once expected to star Rebecca Chambers and be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, was allegedly canceled in 2022.
While it’s disheartening news for those hoping to return to the iconic Spencer Mansion in a full modern remake, there’s still a lot on the horizon for Resident Evil fans. Capcom’s roadmap is packed with potential, and although the RE1 remake dream is on hold, it’s far from dead.
