One of the most legendary horror franchises in gaming is coming to mobile, and it’s bringing some familiar faces along for the ride. Capcom has officially announced Resident Evil Survival Unit, a brand-new mobile-exclusive game launching in late 2025, featuring beloved characters like Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, and more.

A New Kind of Resident Evil Experience

Announced during Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, Resident Evil Survival Unit is being helmed by Shinji Hashimoto, a veteran of the gaming industry best known for his work on the Final Fantasy series at Square Enix. Despite retiring in 2022, Hashimoto has returned with this bold new project that reimagines Resident Evil’s traditional gameplay for mobile platforms.

Unlike past entries in the franchise, this mobile installment shifts toward a team-based survival format, giving players control of squads of three characters, each with unique abilities tailored to specific gameplay scenarios.

Familiar Faces, Fresh Roles

The character roster blends iconic heroes with deep-cut fan favorites. Confirmed playable characters so far include:

  • Leon S. Kennedy – Balanced stats and tactical leadership

  • Jill Valentine – Trap detection and combat expertise

  • Claire Redfield – Medical support and quick mobility

  • Carlos Oliveira – Heavy weapon specialist

  • Robert Kendo – Crafting and scavenging skills

This diverse lineup gives players more flexibility in how they approach missions, with gameplay seemingly built around synergy, survival, and tactical combat.

Story and Setting

The story begins with players waking up in an abandoned hospital, the latest victims of a new wave of Umbrella Corp experiments. From there, they must escape and survive while uncovering the mystery behind their abduction. The gameplay loop centers on recruiting allies, building squads, and taking on increasingly dangerous bioterror threats in both solo and cooperative online missions.

Designed for Mobile, Built for Fans

Resident Evil Survival Unit is being developed specifically for mobile devices, and Capcom has promised a premium horror experience despite the change in platform. Early teaser footage (watch the trailer) showcases detailed graphics, intense atmosphere, and a revamped control scheme designed to be intuitive on smartphones and tablets.

Capcom has not yet announced pre-registration details, but fans can expect additional updates in the coming months.

Resident Evil Survival Unit may be a major shift from the franchise’s console roots, but it’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting mobile horror titles to date. With returning characters, fresh mechanics, and a new story that respects the franchise’s roots, this mobile installment could surprise even the most skeptical fans.
