Pokémon fans in the United States can finally experience the magic of the Pokémon Fossil Museum. Once exclusive to Japan, this unique traveling exhibit is officially heading west—and it’s kicking off its U.S. debut at the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois, on May 22, 2026.

Announced by The Pokémon Company, the Pokémon Fossil Museum blends real-world paleontology with the imaginative world of fossil Pokémon. Originally launched in Japan in 2021, the exhibit has been praised for educating visitors about extinct species using familiar Pokémon like Aerodactyl, Kabutops, Tyrantrum, and others as engaging, fictional parallels.

What Can Fans Expect?

The Pokémon Fossil Museum features life-sized displays, fossil replicas, and interactive experiences that compare ancient creatures with their Pokémon counterparts. It’s a science-meets-pop-culture initiative designed to inspire curiosity and make learning about prehistoric life fun for fans of all ages.

According to the official Pokémon website, the exhibit will follow a similar format to its Japanese tour, which means it’s likely to stay in each location for 1 to 4 months. That gives fans ample time to plan their trip to Chicago—or wait for the museum to hit a city near them if it continues to tour the U.S.

The Power of Pokémon Beyond Games

Since its debut in the 1990s, the Pokémon franchise has become a cultural icon, expanding well beyond video games and trading cards. Collaborations with brands like McDonald’s and themed cafes have kept the momentum going globally. While many of Pokémon’s physical experiences remain Japan-exclusive, this fossil museum marks a rare and welcome expansion for Western fans.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It

  • Exclusive U.S. premiere at one of the most prestigious natural history museums.

  • Educational value for kids, students, and families interested in science.

  • Photo ops and themed merchandise likely to be available on-site.
