A new report has dealt a crushing blow to fans of Outriders. The long-speculated sequel, allegedly titled Outriders 2, was reportedly in the works under the codename Project Gemini—and it was nearly finished. Unfortunately, the project has now been shelved amid significant layoffs at developer People Can Fly.
According to a detailed exclusive from Thumb Wars, the Polish studio canceled two internal games in June 2025, one of which was Project Gemini, now revealed to be the sequel to Outriders. The report suggests the game was well into development before being quietly axed, with insider sources citing a lack of interest and communication from the unnamed publisher—widely assumed to be Square Enix—as the main reason behind the decision.
This news follows a rough few years for People Can Fly. In June 2025, the studio underwent major restructuring and layoffs, which many now believe were the final nail in the coffin for Outriders 2.
Outriders Had Potential, But Fell Short
Outriders launched in 2021 as a third-person, co-op looter shooter that mixed intense gunplay with deep RPG systems. Despite an impressive start—boasting over 3.5 million players in its first month—the game struggled to maintain momentum due to technical issues, underwhelming endgame content, and live-service shortcomings. Though not a full-on live-service title, many players felt support was lacking.
Critics were divided, and while some praised the combat and build variety, others labeled it one of the most disappointing games of 2021. Still, a loyal fanbase hoped a sequel would address its issues and build something greater.
The End of the Line for Outriders?
The revelation that Outriders 2 was so far along before being canceled stings all the more for fans. If true, Project Gemini could’ve marked a major turning point for the franchise. Instead, the lack of publisher support—likely from Square Enix—suggests the Outriders brand is no longer a priority.
With People Can Fly now refocusing on other projects and recovering from layoffs, the chances of Outriders 2 being revived seem slim.
For now, it looks like the Outriders universe won’t be getting a second chance.
