Nintendo has officially announced the next wave of its Switch Online Playtest Program, set to run from July 28 to August 10, 2025. What Is the Nintendo Switch Online Playtest Program?

First launched in 2024, the Nintendo Switch Online Playtest Program allows selected users to test unreleased or in-development features tied to Nintendo’s online ecosystem. The previous test—held from October 23 to November 5, 2024—involved a “multiplayer creative sandbox game” where players could gather items, explore, and build structures collaboratively.

Now, Nintendo is reviving the program with the same game or service under evaluation, but it has yet to reveal any gameplay specifics. The 2025 test may bring new mechanics or improved multiplayer features.

Who Can Participate?

Participants must meet the following requirements to apply:

  • Be 18 years or older

  • Have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription

  • Have a Nintendo Account registered in one of the following countries:
United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, or Spain

  • Individuals or groups can register, but group members must all meet the criteria and be from the same country

How to Join the Playtest

Eligible players can apply through the official Nintendo Playtest Portal starting July 21 at 8 a.m. PT. Participation is capped at 40,000 users, so early registration is crucial.

Once accepted, players will receive download instructions and further information via email. Nintendo notes that all participants will be asked to provide feedback post-test.

Why It Matters

Nintendo’s approach to limited playtesting is a rare move, especially on a global scale. Unlike demos or open betas, this playtest aims to collect user data on system performance, game mechanics, and multiplayer interactions ahead of a potential future release.

As part of Nintendo’s ongoing strategy to strengthen its online infrastructure, this program could play a vital role in shaping how Switch Online evolves—especially with the rise of Switch 2 and expanded online services.

With only 40,000 spots available, the Nintendo Switch Online Playtest Program is shaping up to be a highly competitive opportunity for fans and testers. If you’re eligible and curious about what’s next for Nintendo’s online services, make sure to register early.
