Nintendo has confirmed that a reported sales figure of 5 million Nintendo Switch 2 units was mistakenly published on an internal website and does not reflect actual sales data.
🚨 The Mistake That Sparked Rumors
Soon after the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, several news outlets and fans circulated claims that the console had already surpassed 5 million units sold, based on data appearing briefly on Nintendo’s investor relations page.
However, Nintendo now says this was an error—and not a case of early success slipping through the cracks.
“The figure was a placeholder on a draft web page not intended for public view,” said a Nintendo spokesperson in response to media inquiries. “It does not represent actual sales or projections.”
The page, which was briefly accessible in late June, was taken down once the mistake was identified.
📈 What Analysts Are Saying
Despite the correction, some industry analysts believe that the Switch 2 is performing exceptionally well. David Gibson, an analyst at MST Financial with longstanding ties to Nintendo, revealed via X (formerly Twitter) that he spoke directly with company officials and confirmed the placeholder explanation.
“I’ve confirmed the 5 million figure was just a dev placeholder that went public accidentally,” Gibson wrote. “But I expect actual launch month sales to exceed that number once reported.”
🕹️ What Makes the Switch 2 a Hot Seller?
The Nintendo Switch 2 launched just over eight years after the original Switch, boasting major upgrades:
-
New GameChat feature for real-time voice communication
-
Mouse support via Joy-Con controllers, expanding gameplay flexibility
-
Powerful internal components, supporting more advanced titles
-
Backward compatibility and rumored cloud sync capabilities
Early hands-on reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, citing faster load times, cleaner visuals, and better online integration.
📊 Official Sales Still Incoming
Although Nintendo hasn’t yet released official sales data for the Switch 2, the company is expected to do so in its upcoming quarterly earnings report. That report will likely cover full launch-month performance and possibly hint at future shipment projections for the rest of 2025.
Until then, fans and investors should take all circulating figures with a dose of skepticism.
