Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog and the creative mind behind The Last of Us series, has poured cold water on fans’ hopes for The Last of Us Part III. Despite ongoing speculation and rumors, Druckmann recently stated that people shouldn’t bet on a sequel happening anytime soon.
In a recent interview with Variety, Druckmann and Craig Mazin were discussing HBO’s upcoming second season of The Last of Us when the game’s future came up. When asked about the possibility of The Last of Us Part III, Neil Druckmann responded:
“I was waiting for this question. I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of Last of Us. This could be it.”
While this doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of a sequel, it suggests that Naughty Dog is not currently working on one. Druckmann emphasized that the studio is focusing on other projects, leaving the future of the franchise uncertain.
This news may disappoint fans eager to see more of Ellie’s journey, especially after the massive success of The Last of Us Part II and the HBO adaptation. However, Druckmann assured that Naughty Dog remains committed to delivering high-quality storytelling, whether within The Last of Us universe or through new IPs.
For now, fans will have to wait and see if the studio ever returns to the world of The Last of Us. Until then, speculation continues, but as Druckmann says—don’t bet on it.
