Rumors suggesting that Xbox head Phil Spencer is planning to retire have been debunked by Microsoft. The tech giant issued an official statement denying recent claims that Spencer will step down from his role as CEO of Microsoft Gaming by 2027.

The speculation began when Call of Duty leaker GhostofHope tweeted that Spencer would be retiring within the next few years and would pass leadership to Xbox President Sarah Bond, supposedly around the launch of the next-generation Xbox console.

However, Microsoft was quick to respond. In a statement to The Verge, Xbox head of communications Kari Perez firmly rejected the rumors, stating:

“Phil is not retiring anytime soon.”
The company further reinforced this denial when Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer Frank Shaw responded to the rumor online, calling it “made up” and completely inaccurate.

A Career of Leadership and Innovation

Phil Spencer has played a pivotal role in shaping the modern Xbox brand. After joining Microsoft in 1988, he transitioned to the Xbox division in 2001 and climbed the ranks to become the face of the platform. As CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Spencer has spearheaded major initiatives such as the Xbox Game Pass, cross-platform gaming, and high-profile acquisitions like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard.

While speculation tied his rumored exit to the launch of the next Xbox console, Microsoft’s statements indicate Spencer remains committed to the brand’s long-term future.

No Changes in Xbox Leadership

Despite the credible tone of the original rumor, particularly with the mention of Sarah Bond as a successor, Microsoft has firmly shut it down. Bond continues to serve as Xbox President and is recognized as a key leader in the company’s future—but there are no plans for her to replace Spencer at this time.

The Phil Spencer retirement rumors may have caught fire online, but Microsoft’s direct response leaves little room for doubt. With Spencer still firmly at the helm, Xbox fans can expect continuity in leadership as the platform evolves into its next phase.
