id Software rumored unannounced FPS development using id Tech engine

Newly surfaced evidence suggests that id Software, the legendary developer behind the DOOM series, is working on an unannounced first-person shooter. While the studio has just released DOOM: The Dark Ages on May 15, 2025, it appears the Texas-based developer already has its sights set on another ambitious project.

Clues From a New Job Listing

The speculation began after a job opening was spotted by Twitter user Timur222. The listing is for a Lead Gameplay Features Programmer on an “unannounced video game project.” Among the qualifications, id Software requests at least six years of industry experience and proven work on FPS games—a strong indicator that the new project will be another shooter.

Built on id Tech

The posting also reveals that the game is being developed using id Tech, the in-house graphics engine that has powered the majority of id Software’s titles. The most recent iteration, id Tech 8, was announced during the January 2025 Xbox Developer Direct. Known for pushing technical boundaries, id Software may even consider a hybrid solution—similar to Quake Champions (2022), which combined id Tech with Saber Interactive’s Saber3D engine.

What Could The Mystery Game Be?

The role doesn’t reveal how far along the project is in development. While senior roles are often filled early, studios also hire such positions later during team expansions. What seems clear is that the game is a multi-platform first-person shooter. The job description specifically requests console development experience, while id Software’s history ensures a PC release is also inevitable.

The mystery project could tie into the potential Quake 6 teaser shown during the January 2024 Xbox Developer Direct, although that teaser was linked to MachineGames rather than id Software. Still, the possibility of a revival or expansion of another classic franchise cannot be ruled out.

For now, fans can only speculate. Whether it’s a follow-up to DOOM, a return to Quake, or an entirely new IP, excitement is already building around id Software’s next move.
