Halo: CE Remake Rumored to Cut Multiplayer

A rumored remake of Halo: CE might skip one of the most iconic features that made the original game a genre-defining hit: multiplayer. According to a recent report from gaming leaker Rebs Gaming, two sources with ties to developers currently working on Halo-related projects claim they’ve heard nothing about a multiplayer component for the rumored remake. If true, this could mean the game will launch as a campaign-only experience, missing the legendary PvP and co-op gameplay that helped define the franchise.

🎯 A Major Shift for Halo Fans

While Microsoft and Halo Studios have yet to officially announce a Halo: CE remake, mounting speculation has fans convinced that something is in development. In June 2024, The Verge’s Tom Warren reported that Microsoft is indeed working on a remastered version of Halo: Combat Evolved — and in a surprising twist, even considering a release on PlayStation 5 as part of the company’s broader push away from Xbox exclusivity.

But this new multiplayer rumor could throw cold water on that excitement. A campaign-only release would feel like a major downgrade to many in the community, especially considering how Halo: CE’s multiplayer helped revolutionize console shooters in the early 2000s.

🕹️ Why This Matters

From LAN parties to split-screen duels, Halo: Combat Evolved’s multiplayer became a cultural phenomenon. Its exclusion from a remake — particularly one that could reach a broader player base via PS5 — would not only limit features like crossplay but also eliminate a huge part of what made Halo an icon.

It also echoes past controversies. When Halo 5: Guardians launched without split-screen multiplayer, the backlash was so fierce that 343 Industries later promised to include it in all future Halo titles — a promise they honored in Halo Infinite.

🔍 What’s Confirmed (and What’s Not)

As of now, nothing is confirmed. Microsoft has remained silent on both the existence of a Halo: CE remake and the rumors surrounding its feature set. The possibility of a campaign-only experience is still just speculation — but given the sources involved, fans are starting to take it seriously. If true, this would mark one of the biggest changes to Halo’s formula yet, and it might not be a welcome one.

Whether this turns out to be a cautious development choice or a miscommunication, the lack of multiplayer in a Halo: Combat Evolved remake would be a controversial move. With no official word from Microsoft or 343 Industries, fans will have to wait and see if this beloved Xbox classic returns — and in what form.
