GTA 5 Finally Unbanned in Saudi Arabia and UAE After 12 Years

Juli 21, 2025
GTA 5 officially available in Saudi Arabia and UAE after ban lifted

After more than a decade of restrictions, Rockstar Games’ blockbuster title, GTA 5, is now officially available in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The long-standing ban has been lifted as of July 17, 2025, signaling a shift in regional attitudes toward controversial video games.

GTA 5, originally released in 2013, had been banned in both countries due to its violent and mature content. As one of the most controversial entries in Rockstar’s crime-focused franchise, the game’s graphic depictions and provocative missions clashed with cultural standards in the region. But now, that’s changed.

🗓️ What Happened on July 17

On July 3, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Media Regulation announced via X (formerly Twitter) that Grand Theft Auto 5 and its online counterpart would be launching on July 17. That same day, PlayStation Arabia confirmed the UAE would also begin offering both titles.

Both countries have given the game a 21+ age rating, stricter than the typical ESRB “M” rating, but still allowing legal adults to access the full experience.

🎮 A Landmark Moment for Middle Eastern Gaming

This move reflects a broader transformation within the Middle East’s gaming landscape. Saudi Arabia, in particular, has recently increased its investment in eSports and gaming infrastructure. The country is even set to host the Olympic eSports Games in 2027, signaling a newfound openness to gaming culture and entertainment.

For years, players in the Middle East had to rely on VPNs, imported physical copies, or grey markets to access GTA 5. With the ban lifted, the game is now accessible through official PlayStation and Xbox storefronts.

🚨 Why the Ban Was Lifted

While Rockstar Games has not commented publicly, analysts suggest the decision may be linked to:

  • Increasing cultural acceptance of gaming

  • Government efforts to modernize and diversify entertainment

  • Regional gaming economies growing rapidly

  • The coming release of GTA 6, which may benefit from early clearance

🧠 What This Means for GTA 6

The unbanning of GTA 5 could set a precedent for future Rockstar releases. With GTA 6 already in development and expected to push boundaries even further, this decision might make a simultaneous global launch more likely, including regions that previously blocked the franchise.

After a 12-year wait, GTA 5 has finally arrived in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. This not only marks a turning point for the franchise in the Middle East but also for gaming culture across the region. With GTA 6 looming on the horizon, the doors appear wide open for what comes next.
