Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is set to launch this fall, marking the long-awaited return of one of Square Enix’s most beloved tactical RPGs. But according to director Kazutoyo Maehiro, it might not be the only strategy title fans can look forward to.

After years of speculation and rumor, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles was officially revealed during Sony’s State of Play presentation on June 4, confirming that a remastered version of the 1997 classic is finally on the way. Slated for release on September 30, the game is coming to multiple platforms and promises significant upgrades, including fully voiced dialogue, adjustable battle speeds, and refined storytelling.

While longtime fans are already celebrating the return of the Ivalice universe, there may be even more to be excited about. In an interview with Inverse, Maehiro—who worked on the original title and now serves as director for the remaster—hinted that this game could pave the way for future installments.

“If it’s successful, it would surely pave the way for the release of new Tactics titles that follow The Ivalice Chronicles,” Maehiro teased.

This subtle statement has fans speculating that a true sequel or entirely new tactics game could be in development, contingent on the performance of the upcoming release.

Maehiro also emphasized that this remaster was developed with new players in mind, aiming to introduce a modern audience to the deep strategic gameplay and rich storytelling that made Final Fantasy Tactics a legend in the genre. By making the experience more accessible without sacrificing depth, The Ivalice Chronicles could not only please nostalgic fans but also ignite a new generation of tactical RPG lovers.

With Square Enix’s growing focus on reviving its classic IPs and the popularity of modern strategy games, the timing seems ideal. Whether this remaster is the start of a new era for Final Fantasy Tactics remains to be seen—but the signs are promising.

Stay tuned, because The Ivalice Chronicles might just be the beginning.
