Collector’s Box for Final Fantasy Tactics Lacks the Game

Square Enix is celebrating the long-awaited return of Final Fantasy Tactics with The Ivalice Chronicles, offering both Classic and Enhanced versions of the beloved tactical RPG. However, while fans were excited to hear about this revival during PlayStation’s June 4 State of Play, a surprising twist emerged afterward—the special $200 Collector’s Box doesn’t include the game at all.

A Collector’s Box Without the Game?

The Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Collector’s Box quietly appeared on the official Square Enix store following the State of Play presentation. Priced at $199.99, the box includes an impressive array of collectibles:

  • Ramza Beoulve figurine

  • Three Chocobo plushes

  • Multiple character and art cards

  • Premium packaging

But notably absent? The actual game—either digital or physical. Square Enix explicitly states that The Ivalice Chronicles must be purchased separately, costing fans an additional $49.99 to enjoy the Classic or Enhanced version.

What Are the Game Versions?

Announced during State of Play, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will be released in two formats:

  • Classic Version – Retains the original look and gameplay with minor modern improvements

  • Enhanced Version – Features remastered visuals, fully-voiced dialogue, and updated mechanics

Both editions are included in any copy of the game. Unfortunately, neither is included in the high-end Collector’s Box.

Community Reaction: Confusion and Criticism

The omission has sparked backlash across forums and social media. While Collector’s Editions not including a physical disc is nothing new, releasing one without any version of the game—digital or otherwise—is unusual. Fans have compared it to past missteps, such as the Avowed SteelBook edition that shipped without a game.

Gamers are now questioning the value of the $200 box, especially since purchasing both the game and the Collector’s Box pushes the total cost toward $250. While some fans are content with the physical extras, others see the omission as a marketing misstep.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Collector’s Box is packed with beautifully crafted memorabilia—but the missing game raises questions about how Collector’s Editions are marketed today. For fans of the series, the collectibles might justify the steep price. But for many others, buying a “Collector’s Box” without the actual game feels like a tactical error.
