The long-requested Elder Scrolls Online crossplay update may finally be on the horizon. According to Game Director Rich Lambert and Studio Director Matt Firor of Zenimax Online Studios, the team is actively working on changes to the game’s core technology that could allow for cross-platform play in the future.
Originally launched in 2014 on PC and later on consoles, The Elder Scrolls Online has grown into one of the most expansive MMORPGs available. Despite its rocky start, the game found success with its buy-to-play model, ESO Plus subscription, and frequent content updates — most recently, the Gold Road expansion in June 2024.
Speaking in the final episode of The Elder Scrolls Online Podcast, Lambert and Firor addressed the community’s long-standing request for crossplay. While the technical foundation still needs significant reworking, the team is exploring viable pathways to connect players across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
The announcement follows the studio’s recent 2025 roadmap, giving fans renewed hope that crossplay could become a major feature in a future update. Although no timeline has been confirmed, the developers emphasized their commitment to making it happen, aligning with the industry-wide trend of unified player experiences.
Why Crossplay Matters for ESO Players
Crossplay would significantly expand multiplayer possibilities in Elder Scrolls Online, making it easier to group up for dungeons, PvP battles, and world events regardless of platform. It could also help boost community engagement and matchmaking efficiency, especially as the game enters its second decade.
