Funcom’s upcoming survival MMO, Dune: Awakening, continues to spark excitement among fans, especially after Game Director Joel Bylos confirmed that crossplay support is “no problem” for the studio. Although the game is currently available only on PC, Funcom has reassured fans that console versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are on the way.
In an interview with Wccftech, Bylos stated that the technical infrastructure is already in place:
“It depends on what the platform holders have to say,” he explained, noting that Funcom’s servers are fully capable of handling crossplay.
This means that while cross-platform play is feasible, its actual implementation will depend on cooperation from Sony and Microsoft.
Challenges and Controversies in Early PC Launch
Since launching on PC in mid-2025, Dune: Awakening has seen both successes and controversies. The MMO drew an impressive number of players, but some mechanics have caused frustration within the community. While regular patches have addressed certain issues, updates have sometimes split the player base, pleasing one side while frustrating another.
Crossplay could serve as a unifying feature, giving fans across platforms the chance to experience Arrakis together regardless of where they play.
Console Release Timeline
As for when console players can expect to join in, Funcom is sticking to a 2026 release window. During the same interview, Bylos jokingly mentioned that the game might launch around the same time as Grand Theft Auto 6, though he didn’t commit to a firm date.
In addition to crossplay, Bylos suggested that private servers may be introduced for console players, just as they already exist on PC.
Industry Context: A Growing Crossplay Trend
Recent moves by both Sony and Microsoft suggest optimism for Funcom’s request. Games like Helldivers 2 and Gears of War: Reloaded have shown a shift away from strict platform exclusivity, raising hopes that Dune: Awakening crossplay support could become a reality.
While Funcom isn’t ready to give console players a specific release date, the prospect of crossplay in Dune: Awakening is promising. With technical hurdles already cleared, it now comes down to PlayStation and Xbox approval. If granted, gamers may soon explore the deserts of Arrakis together, no matter their platform of choice.
