Fans eagerly awaiting the DQ 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake on Nintendo platforms just got some disappointing news — there will be no upgrade path from the Switch version to the Switch 2 version, according to an official FAQ posted by Square Enix.

Switch and Switch 2 Treated as Separate Titles

On the official Dragon Quest site, Square Enix clarified that although players who purchase the game on the current Nintendo Switch will be able to play it on the Switch 2, this version will not benefit from any enhanced graphical features offered by the newer hardware.

Worse still, the Switch and Switch 2 versions are considered entirely separate games. This means:

  • No free or paid upgrade option

  • No shared save data between versions

  • Download codes are platform-specific

For example, a download code for the Switch 2 version will only work on the Switch 2, and not the original Switch. Likewise, saves from the original Switch version will not carry over if players decide to buy the game again for Switch 2.

October 30, 2025 Launch Confirmed

DQ 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake will officially release on October 30, 2025, bringing fully reimagined versions of the first two titles in the legendary JRPG franchise, originally released in 1986 and 1987.

The remake uses the beloved HD-2D visual style, combining pixel art with 3D environments, lighting, and effects — a style made popular by games like Octopath Traveler and Live A Live. But the upgrades go beyond visuals.

What’s New in the Remake?

This isn’t just a graphical refresh. The remakes will include:

  • New cutscenes

  • Updated difficulty settings

  • Character customization options

  • Streamlined mechanics for modern players

These enhancements aim to modernize the experience without losing the charm of the original adventures. The project is part of a broader plan to remake the entire original Dragon Quest trilogy, with Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake also confirmed to include expanded story content.

Should You Wait for Switch 2?

With no upgrade option and no shared save functionality, fans planning to purchase the Nintendo Switch 2 may want to wait for the next-gen version of the remake, especially if they’re interested in the enhanced visuals and system-specific features.

The lack of a DQ 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake Switch 2 upgrade option is unfortunate for fans who hoped for a smooth transition between consoles. While the game will be playable on both, it’s clear that Square Enix is treating them as separate experiences — requiring players to choose their platform carefully or potentially purchase the game twice.

Regardless of your decision, this remake promises to be a beautiful and heartfelt return to two classic RPGs that started it all.
