On May 29, Kojima Productions surprised fans with a unique reveal: Hololive VTuber Usada Pekora will appear in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach as a Prepper NPC—a type of character players can interact with throughout the game’s world.
This unexpected cameo continues a tradition set by the original Death Stranding, which featured real-life celebrities like Conan O’Brien and Geoff Keighley in minor but memorable roles. Usada Pekora, with her energetic persona and signature rabbit ears, is now the latest to join this eclectic cast of in-game cameos.
The announcement was made via Kojima Productions’ official X account, where a short gameplay clip showcased Pekora’s appearance. In the video, her voice is first heard from a projector after protagonist Sam Porter Bridges exits a container. The camera then shifts to reveal her presence as a holographic image. Sam thanks Pekora, who responds with a cheerful bow, adding a whimsical touch to the otherwise somber tone of the game.
Kojima Productions confirmed that Pekora will serve as a Prepper NPC, though her exact function in the game’s mechanics or storyline remains unknown. What’s clear, however, is that her inclusion adds another layer of intermedia experimentation that Death Stranding has become known for.
This reveal came shortly after Kojima Productions announced that Death Stranding 2 has gone gold, meaning the core development is complete. The PS5 exclusive is set for launch on June 26, and post-release patches are expected to refine any remaining issues.
In addition to the game’s release, fans can look forward to a Death Stranding anime adaptation, as well as a live-action film being produced by A24—both currently in development. These projects suggest that Kojima’s vision for the Death Stranding universe is expanding far beyond gaming.
As the lines continue to blur between virtual and real-world celebrities, Kojima’s decision to feature a popular VTuber like Usada Pekora only further cements Death Stranding 2 as a title unafraid to break conventions.
Mark your calendars for June 26, when Death Stranding 2: On the Beach delivers its next bold step in storytelling—complete with digital rabbits and all.
