Code Vein 2 and Mortal Shell 2 sequels revealed with dramatic gameplay at Summer Game Fest 2025

More than five years after their original releases, two cult-favorite Soulslike games are officially getting sequels. Code Vein 2 and Mortal Shell 2 were both announced at the Summer Game Fest 2025, sending waves of excitement through the action RPG community.

Both titles debuted in the late stages of the previous console generation and are now being developed natively for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, promising significant improvements in visuals, combat design, and gameplay depth.

Code Vein 2 – Stylish Despair Reborn

Developed by Bandai Namco, Code Vein 2 doubles down on the original’s unique blend of Soulslike combat and anime aesthetics. The trailer teases an even bolder look, with striking fashion-forward character designs and dramatic new settings.

The sequel introduces Lou, a mysterious new companion with time manipulation abilities, adding a fresh twist to combat and exploration. As with its predecessor, Code Vein 2 retains its AI companion system, offering a more team-driven dynamic compared to the genre’s typically solitary approach. Sneak peeks at driveable vehicles and massive boss encounters hint at an ambitious evolution of the game’s scale and mechanics.

Mortal Shell 2 – Grim, Gritty, and More Brutal Than Ever

Meanwhile, Cold Symmetry’s Mortal Shell 2 returns with its signature bleak tone—but this time, the atmosphere is even heavier. Desaturated visuals and chilling soundscapes give the game a haunting, almost monochrome aesthetic that sets it apart from the competition.

Mortal Shell 2 pushes the formula further by introducing brutal execution moves and rapid-fire ranged combat, offering a faster, more aggressive flow. Most notably, the sequel removes the traditional stamina system, signaling a bold departure from the classic Souls formula and enabling more fluid, relentless combat.

The game is slated for release in 2026, giving players ample time to prepare for another descent into the abyss.

The Soulslike Renaissance Continues

The announcement of Code Vein 2 and Mortal Shell 2 underscores the continued evolution and popularity of the Soulslike genre. As studios experiment with new mechanics, aesthetics, and storytelling approaches, these sequels promise to bring both familiar challenge and exciting innovation to fans.

If the rest of Summer Game Fest 2025 is anything like this, we’re in for a dark and glorious ride.
