According to a trusted source, Call of Duty 2027 may mark a major turning point for the franchise. A new rumor suggests that Sledgehammer Games is developing an all-new Call of Duty subseries set for release in 2027—one that will break free from both Modern Warfare and Black Ops traditions.
A New Direction Beyond the Big Two
While Black Ops 6 continues strong in its fourth season, and Black Ops 7 is building hype with its futuristic setting and the return of David Mason, Sledgehammer is reportedly preparing something entirely different.
According to TheGhostOfHope on X (formerly Twitter), Sledgehammer’s upcoming title will not be a continuation of Advanced Warfare as previously speculated. Instead, it’s said to introduce a modern-day setting with fresh gameplay ideas—marking the start of a new subseries within the Call of Duty universe.
No Zombies Mode, but Martial Arts?
In a surprising twist, the report also claims that Zombies mode will not be included, despite Sledgehammer’s history with co-op zombie content. Instead, the focus seems to be on fast-paced, movement-heavy gameplay, with elements of martial arts, including karate kicks and chops—an unexpected addition that could signal a deeper melee system or an entirely new combat mechanic.
This new combat direction, combined with a departure from existing subseries, could provide the most distinct Call of Duty experience in years.
Sledgehammer’s Evolution
As the youngest among the “Big Three” Call of Duty studios (alongside Infinity Ward and Treyarch), Sledgehammer Games has had a unique trajectory. From its co-development on 2011’s Modern Warfare 3, to the ambitious Advanced Warfare in 2014, the historical WW2 titles, and most recently, the Modern Warfare 3 reboot in 2023—Sledgehammer has consistently played a pivotal role in expanding Call of Duty’s boundaries.
Now, the studio appears ready to forge its own narrative and gameplay identity with the 2027 installment.
If this rumor proves true, Call of Duty 2027 may be the fresh start the franchise needs—one that steps away from the comfort zones of Modern Warfare and Black Ops to explore uncharted territory. With no Zombies, enhanced movement, and martial arts mechanics, Sledgehammer could be redefining what a Call of Duty game can be.
Until Activision or Sledgehammer confirms the details, fans will have to wait—possibly until Gamescom 2026—to see just how real this evolution is.
