Black Myth: Zhong Kui was officially revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live, closing the show with a brand-new trailer. While many fans were expecting an expansion for Black Myth: Wukong, Game Science instead unveiled a fresh project centered on Zhong Kui, the ghost-catching god from Chinese folklore. But contrary to concerns, this new title does not mark the end of Sun Wukong’s journey.
Game Science Confirms Wukong Will Return
Game Science CEO Feng Ji addressed fan concerns directly on Chinese social media site Weibo, confirming that the studio is not finished with Wukong. While development focus has shifted to Zhong Kui, Feng Ji stated:
“Like all of you, I love the world of Journey to the West, the world of demons, monsters, gods, and Buddhas, so Sun Wukong’s legend will return in due course, in a more complete and solid way, once it’s properly prepared.”
This means Black Myth: Wukong’s legacy is secure—and fans can expect to revisit the Monkey King in future projects.
Why Black Myth: Zhong Kui Comes First
Originally, post-launch DLC was planned for Black Myth: Wukong. However, co-founder Yang Qui challenged Feng Ji with a bold question: would it be better to create something entirely new instead of a DLC? That conversation sparked the birth of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, which will be a single-player action RPG launching on PC and current consoles.
According to Feng Ji, the team wanted to:
-
“Free our hands” – break away from being bound to expansions.
-
“Experiment boldly” – try new mechanics and design choices.
-
“Start from scratch” – craft a fresh experience without the weight of Wukong’s established formula.
Zhong Kui: A Mythic Hero of His Own
Zhong Kui is a famous deity in Chinese mythology, often called a “ghost-catching god” who wanders between Hell and Earth. His legend promises a different style of storytelling compared to Wukong, offering fans a new perspective on China’s rich folklore.
What This Means for Wukong Fans
For now, Wukong is taking a temporary backseat, but Feng Ji’s statements make it clear:
-
Wukong is not retired. His story will continue in the future.
-
Black Myth: Zhong Kui is not a replacement, but an expansion of the mythological universe Game Science is building.
-
Future projects may include a Wukong sequel or standalone expansion, though details remain under wraps.
While Black Myth: Zhong Kui is the next big step for Game Science, Sun Wukong’s legend is far from over. Fans can look forward to a return to the world of Journey to the West once the studio is ready to deliver a more complete continuation of his tale.
For now, Zhong Kui steps into the spotlight—but the Monkey King will rise again.
