Bethesda developer Tim Lamb has confirmed that Starfield is receiving a brand-new story DLC, alongside major free updates and gameplay improvements. This marks the second narrative expansion for the sci-fi RPG, following the release of Shattered Space in September 2024.
While Shattered Space was praised by fans, it did little to revive the game’s declining player base. Bethesda hopes the upcoming expansion could turn things around, especially as long-time players have been asking for more meaningful space exploration mechanics.
Hints at the Expansion’s Title
Bethesda has been teasing a second DLC since Todd Howard mentioned “Year 2” updates in mid-2024. Recently, fans discovered a patent filing for the name “Starborn,” leading many to speculate that this could be the title of the expansion. If true, it may give clues to the story’s direction.
Developer Spotlight Confirms New Content
In a developer spotlight video, Lamb reassured fans that Bethesda is actively working on:
-
A new story DLC
-
Free updates and requested features
-
Space gameplay improvements
-
Starfield Creation mod support
He specifically mentioned that part of the team is dedicated to making space travel “more rewarding,” which lines up with recent leaks from modders.
Rumors of ‘Cruise Mode’ and Gameplay Overhaul
Dataminers uncovered references to a potential “cruise mode” feature hidden in Starfield’s files. This would replace the current reliance on loading screens with a more interactive form of ship travel. Lamb’s comments strongly suggest this could become a core update alongside the new DLC.
Release Timing and Platforms
Lamb did not provide a release date, but industry insiders claim the next DLC likely won’t arrive before 2026. Coincidentally, rumors also point to Starfield launching on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 in spring 2026—a timing that would align perfectly with the release of a major expansion.
