In a surprise announcement that has disappointed many fans, Beat Saber—one of the most iconic virtual reality games to date—will no longer receive updates on PlayStation VR and PSVR2. This development marks yet another major setback for Sony’s VR platform, which has been facing mounting uncertainty in recent months.

The End of an Era for PSVR and PSVR2

Beat Games, the developer of Beat Saber, confirmed via the game’s official FAQ that the June 5 update, featuring Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra,” will be the final content release for PlayStation versions of the game. While the game will still be playable, no new songs or features will be added going forward.

In addition, multiplayer support will be shut down on January 21, 2026, for both PS4 and PS5 VR platforms, leaving fans with only the single-player experience.

Why This Matters for PlayStation VR2

Beat Saber has been one of the cornerstone titles for VR enthusiasts, especially on PlayStation. It has consistently ranked among the top-rated VR games, boasting a 4.69-star rating from over 26,000 users on the PlayStation Store. Its engaging rhythm-based gameplay and frequent content updates helped keep Sony’s VR platform relevant, even when other titles slowed their support.

Now, with the end of updates and eventual removal of multiplayer, Sony’s VR ecosystem takes yet another hit—following other troubling signs such as Sony’s reduced first-party VR game development.

A Broader Shift in the VR Landscape

The decision doesn’t affect PC or Meta Quest versions of Beat Saber, which will continue to receive full support. This contrast underscores the shift in industry momentum toward standalone and PC-based VR platforms, leaving Sony’s console-tied VR hardware in a difficult position.

With fewer exclusives, minimal hardware sales growth, and now the departure of major third-party support like Beat Saber, the PlayStation VR2’s future looks increasingly uncertain.

What PlayStation Users Can Expect Going Forward

Although new content won’t be coming, PSVR and PSVR2 users will still:

  • Be able to purchase all existing content released prior to June 18, 2025

  • Play all previously acquired songs and music packs

  • Receive basic customer support for issues with the game

  • Enjoy single-player gameplay even after multiplayer ends in 2026

Still, the loss of ongoing support and multiplayer functionality is a clear sign that the game—and potentially the platform—is being left behind.

The decision to end Beat Saber support on PlayStation VR2 is a disheartening development for the PSVR community. As one of the platform’s best-known titles, its withdrawal from active development highlights a broader trend of waning confidence in Sony’s VR ecosystem.

Unless Sony makes bold moves to revive interest in PSVR2, this could be just the beginning of a slow decline for the platform’s user base and developer support alike.
