Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Remake Hype Grows with Steam Activity

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Steam listing update hinting at remake

Even more circumstantial evidence suggesting Ubisoft is actively working on a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has surfaced, this time via some intriguing updates to the game’s Steam repository.

The speculation, which has been simmering since the early 2020s, gained traction after fans noticed backend activity involving new assets being added to the game’s listing on Valve’s platform. With Black Flag’s 12th anniversary approaching this October, many are interpreting these changes as a sign that an official reveal could be just around the corner.

According to user TheRealZephryss on Twitter, Ubisoft has quietly updated the Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Steam page with four new versions of a gameplay “microtrailer”, the video that plays when users view the game through a browser or the Steam client. While such promotional tweaks aren’t unusual for active titles, they’re uncommon for legacy games over a decade old—especially ones that haven’t seen recent content releases.

Further supporting this theory, data scraped from SteamDB shows that Ubisoft made modifications to several content packages for the game on June 4 and June 12. Although the details of these changes haven’t been publicly disclosed, the timing and context of the updates are fueling fan theories that Ubisoft may be quietly preparing for a next-gen re-release or full remake reveal.

Initial reports of a Black Flag remake first emerged in 2023, citing inside sources who claimed the project had been greenlit in the early 2020s. Since then, supporting clues have gradually accumulated—ranging from job listings to insider leaks—all pointing to a renewed focus on one of the franchise’s most beloved entries.

Released in 2013, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is widely regarded as one of the high points of the series, thanks to its swashbuckling pirate setting, compelling naval combat, and charismatic anti-hero Edward Kenway. A remake could reintroduce the game to new audiences with updated visuals, refined mechanics, and a smoother open-world experience suited to modern hardware.

As of now, Ubisoft has yet to comment on the rumored remake. However, with backend updates, repository changes, and the game’s milestone anniversary on the horizon, fans are advised to keep their telescopes pointed toward any upcoming Ubisoft Forward or gaming showcase events.
